Across Africa

Serengeti & Ngorongoro

The Great Migration, and a crater brimming with life.

Getting there

Tanzania

Suggested length

5–7 nights, superb with 5–7 more in Zanzibar

From

USD 600

Ideal for

First-time and returning safari-goers

The Serengeti is the safari most people picture before they have ever been on one: golden plains to the horizon, columns of wildebeest a million strong, and predators that never have to look far for a meal. The Great Migration moves through it in a slow annual loop, and timing your camp to where the herds are is the whole game — which is exactly what we do for you.

An hour south, the Ngorongoro Crater is a different world: a collapsed volcano whose walls hold a self-contained ark of lion, elephant, black rhino and flamingo. One unhurried day on the crater floor is among the densest wildlife experiences in Africa.

It is a longer haul than Botswana, so we build it to be worth the trip — and we will tell you honestly when the herds will be where you are going, rather than promising river crossings in a month they don't happen.

Highlights

  • The Great Wildebeest Migration across the plains
  • Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti (Jul–Oct)
  • Calving season on the southern plains (Jan–Mar)
  • A full day in the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Hot-air balloon safaris at dawn

When to go

River crossings

Jul – Oct

The herds mass in the northern Serengeti and brave the Mara River. Dramatic, popular, book well ahead.

Calving season

Jan – Mar

Hundreds of thousands of births on the southern plains, with predators in close attendance.

Green shoulder

Apr – Jun & Nov

Fewer vehicles, lush scenery and lower rates between the rains.

Getting there

Fly via Johannesburg or Nairobi to Kilimanjaro (JRO), then a light-aircraft hop to the Serengeti airstrips. We sequence camps to the migration and handle every transfer.
